The public review and comment period for the California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation 2011/2012 Grants and Cooperative Agreements Program is currently underway and will end Monday, April 2, 2012. This provides an opportunity for the public to review and provide comments to the preliminary applications submitted to the OHMVR Division for consideration during the 2011/2012 grant cycle. Public comments should be submitted to both the applicant and the OHMVR Division by emailing the contact person listed on the preliminary application and copying the OHMVR Division at ohvinfo@parks.ca.gov.

The Division’s On-Line Grants Application (OLGA) database allows the public to view preliminary applications in a centralized location. Please download the instructions on accessing the preliminary applications.

Please note that the deadline to submit your comments is April 2, 2012.

In addition to the permit fees you pay to recreate in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area (ISDRA), local agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, Imperial County Sheriff’s Office and the ASA’s sister organization, the American Desert Foundation rely on this grant funding to provide ISDRA services. Such services include, but are not limited to: ATV Safety training, EMS services & supplies, educational outreach, law enforcement, sand removal, toilet maintenance and trash removal. Please take a moment to participate in this important process.

Because of the decrease in the amount of grant funding currently available, the process has become extremely competitive. Your comments and letters of support are strongly encouraged.

Beltway to Sand Highway (at the Imperial Sand Dunes)

Three members of the Washington Office Division of Education, Interpretation, and Partnerships visited the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area on Friday, March 9, 2012. The trio had just completed attending the Association of Partners for Public Lands conference in Las Vegas, and traveled to the dunes for a site visit. Brianna Candelaria (Interpretation Lead), Trevor Needham (Partnership Lead), and Betsy Wooster (Youth Programs Lead) were interested in learning more about this dynamic area and its related programs. “With back to back Silver Awards in 2010 and 2011 for Excellence in Interpretation or Education, the El Centro Field Office is doing something right, and we had to visit,” commented Interpretation Lead Brianna Candelaria.

While at the dunes, the Washington party was given a brief overview of the area, which included updates on the various outreach, interpretive, and safety programs provided to the public, many of them possible through an extensive network of partners. A buggy ride through the dunes afforded them with hands-on experience illustrating exactly why the area attracts 1.5 million visitors each year. The group ended their visit with sand in their teeth, smiles on their faces, and an appreciation of the challenges and opportunities found only at the Imperial Sand Dunes.

Avoiding Blasts from the Past

The El Centro Field Office participated in training designed to inform and educate staff to the presence and danger of unexploded ordnance (UXO) left over from military training activities during WWII. With a good deal of the resource area located in the former California-Arizona Maneuver Area (C-AMA), the odds of finding munitions and munitions debris from these training activities remains high. The BLM-California Desert District manages the majority of the former C-AMA in southeastern California.

The training was provided by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the agency responsible for the clean-up and environmental restoration of these areas. Instructor Sonny Franks provided hands-on examples of the seven general types of munitions that may be found on BLM’s public lands. These include small arms ammunition, projectiles, mortars, land mines, rockets, grenades and smoke pots. (Readers may remember a 40mm grenade found by a camper in the Dune Buggy Flats area of the Imperial Sand Dunes in November, 2011.)

Visitors to BLM public lands, and other Imperial Valley desert locations, are reminded that unexploded ordnances (UXO) are often very unstable and dangerous. Because not every bomb looks like a bomb, keep away from strange looking devices and contact authorities immediately. Here are some guidelines to follow should you encounter a UXO.

If you see UXO, STOP, do not move closer.

Do NOT transmit radio frequencies near UXO (this includes cell phones, two-way radios or citizen’s band radio. Keep at least 100 ft. away).

NEVER touch, move, or disturb UXO.

NEVER remove anything near UXO.

Call 911 and report UXO. Move 100 ft. away before using cell phone or radio.

Avoid any area where UXO is located.

Remember: Recognize. Retreat. Report.

“Well there is a saying…. ” you can’t win em all” The Jagged X team was reminded how true this is at the mint last weekend.

As everyone knows we have been busy building two brand new cars to debut at this race. Anyone who has built a desert race car knows how the last minute stuff can really take it’s toll. I am hear to say that if you build two cars it is twice as bad!

We had all hands on deck for the last few weeks finishing the two RZR XP 4′s and at about 3:00 am on Friday morning the cars finnaly headed to Vegas with virtually no test time. We feel that the final product looked as good as anything we have ever built X 2 with the cars being identical twins.

The whole weekend became a series of bad luck events starting on Friday evening when we discovered a coolling system problem on one of the new cars. This forced us to pull the plug on one of the cars.

After discussing the options with the team we made the decision to have our two pro drivers compete and surrender our Sportsman entry. Matt parks would drive the new 1932 XP4 while Brandon Schueler would step into the pure stock XP 4 Previously raced at the Parker 250 by Bill Schueler and Craig Scanlon from Polaris Ind.

This course was among the roughest BITD tracks that our drivers have seen in a long time. The start went off good but things began to deteriorate in a hurry. Just a few miles out of pit one the stock 1919 car found something in the dust which caused the left front control arms to become distorted (nice way of saying it ) Brandon and Blake would spend the next several hours making reapairs but would finnaly time out before completing the first lap.

Matt Parks in the new RZR XP4 was busy using his new Kroyer racing engine to come from the very back starting postion to pick off UTV’s, cars & trucks making his way toward the front of the grid. at the end of lap one a primary clutch failure cost the 1932 some valuble time. Matt worked forward in the pack until a broken uniball pin would end his day, leaving him stranded in no man’s land

It was a dissapointing outing for the whole JX team but we were able to realize the potential of the new platform and now have the time to prepare for the Silver State 300 in May.

We want to thank all of our sponsors.

RJ Anderson has been a strong driver in the WORCS series. After Havasu this past weekend, RJ and Team Walker Evans Racing are the new points leader.

Riverside, CA 3/21/2012 – RJ Anderson and the Walker Evans Racing (WER) team headed to Lake Havasu, AZ last weekend and it wasn’t because they wanted to partake in the spring break madness. No, RJ and the team had work to do and work is exactly what they did. After coming up short in round 2 RJ was ready for a win in the Production 1000 class in his Polaris RZR XP900. With his Holz Racing built machine fully prepped RJ lined up next to 30 other class racers and took them all to school putting in the races fastest lap time and winning in dominating fashion. RJ was a full minute ahead of the second place finisher when the checkered flag dropped dominating the class and the race. With this win RJ moved into first in points giving him added confidence and motivation heading towards round 4 of the series. Needless to say, RJ fully enjoyed the tight and rough course at Crazyhorse Campground in Lake Havasu, AZ.

In other news, Walker Evans Racing is proud to announce that RJ Anderson will now be racing with the Stronghold Motorsports team for 2012 at the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series (LOORRS). This is a huge move for RJ and his #37 ProLite race team as he now will be racing beside new teammates Jeremy McGrath, Cameron Steele, and Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg. Stronghold Motorsports is the premier racing team in short course off-road racing.

“We are proud to bring aboard the next generation of off road racing superstar,” said Stronghold Motorsports managing partner, Scott Bailey. “Our organization has a great deal of respect for the Anderson and Walker Evans Racing families, and the exceptional level of success they have accomplished both on the track and in the off road racing industry. We are excited in mentoring and continuing RJ’s development as we contend for the ProLite title in 2012.”

We are proud to announce that RJ Anderson’s new personal race site has been launched! RJ37.com will be where RJ and his team will keep fans, sponsors, and those interested on what and where RJ is competing in the know. Its a great way to keep everyone informed on his progression throughout the season and his career. So go visit RJ37.com often and keep up on all things RJ Anderson.

LAS VEGAS– The world-renowned General Tire Mint 400 has selected the Golden Nugget Las Vegas as the “Official Host Hotel” for the 2012 race. With over 270 pre-entries already counted, the top off-road teams in the world will compete in over twenty different classes of race vehicles at this year’s Mint 400, which will take place the week of March 21 and continue until March 25, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Started in 1976, The Mint is steeped in American lore as thousands of racers in addition to celebrities from around the world have attempted to tame the brutal Nevada desert. Contingency gives the fans a chance to see the race vehicles up close and personal, as well as check out a variety of off-road related products including merchandise from their favorite teams.

“The Golden Nugget was our first choice. It’s important for us to keep The Mint connected with its history on Fremont Street. I stay at the Golden Nugget every time I am in Las Vegas, the rooms are upscale as the hotel is newly remodeled, and the service is outstanding. The Rush tower feels like my second home, they have some of the best restaurants in the Fremont Area,” said Mint 400 CEO Matt Martelli.

“We are excited to have the General Tire Mint 400 here this year. We welcome the drivers, teams and fans and look forward to providing a great experience for all. The Golden Nugget and Downtown is a great fit for off-road racing and we hope to be the “Official Hotel” for the Mint 400 for years to come,” said Amy Chasey, Vice President of Marketing at Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino.

The Golden Nugget now offers more than 2,400 deluxe guestrooms and suites; a high-energy casino featuring the most popular slot and video poker machines, table games, race and sports book, and poker room; nightly entertainment with master impressionist and comedian Gordie Brown; world-class restaurants such as Grotto Italian Ristorante and Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse; a luxury spa and salon; and The Tank, a year-round outdoor swimming pool complete with a 200,000-gallon, live shark aquarium and the new H20 poolside lounge. Since 2005, the Golden Nugget Las Vegas has made more than $180 million in upgrades, renovations and expansions under Landry’s Inc, introducing first-class accommodations, exquisite dining options and fun-filled entertainment venues.
On Thursday February 9th Johnson Valley California again played host to the 2012 King Of The Hammers UTV race. Teammates, Brian Bush and co-driver Greg Frantz of Lonestar Racing, and Rotax Your Rhino set out to back up their respectable third place finish from 2011. The two we’re lucky to have drawn the #1 starting position for Thursday’s race, but that wouldn’t be enough to seal up another podium finish.

Brian took the green flag at 8:00am leaving the line next to a Polaris XP900. The two cars raced over the start/finish jump and into corner #1 of the course. Brian took the hole shot and never looked back. The two set out at a comfortable race pace as they had the advantage of a dust free race course, and there was no need to throw the race away so early in the day.

Once they were well underway, gauges were checked, race equipment was inspected, and nerves were settling. Brian describes his first feelings of the race as, “the best morning of racing I’ve ever had”

They held off race traffic until around the 35 minute mark where they were passed by the (soon to be) race winner, Mitch Guthrie. Considering their considerably fast race pace, this meant Mitch was on rails! Just after being passed, the team made a navigational error putting them in a position where they were stopped for a couple of minutes. During this time, they were passed by 3 other cars. Brian quickly got back underway and gave chase. Within minutes he had passed two of the cars who passed them while stuck. They pulled into pit #1 in third place.

After taking fuel, Brian and Greg set out through the lake bed and put the hammer down. Everything on the race car was working flawlessly as they made their way towards the most difficult rock section on the course, “Elvis”While pulling into the area where spectators were cheering racers on, there was no explanation as to why radio transmission was informing the team that they had a broken part on the front end. At this point Brian noticed the something wasn’t right, and co-driver Greg got out of the car to assess the situation. At this point the lower control arm was in the dirt and the Rhino would no longer move under its own power. The two were able to winch the car into a better spot where other cars would be able to pass them. The towel was thrown in.

This was said by Joey DiGiovanni who was at Elvis covering the event:

“Lastly I want to tell the story of Brian Bush. “Brian B.” has been preparing his Rotax powered Rhino for battle since last years KOH race. With a little luck he drew the #1 start position for this years race putting his powerful UTV on the pole and in a prime position to make a run for the win. Brian settled into a conservative pace not wanting to risk a mechanical failure early on. After playing a little leap frog in the first 35 or so miles Bush would come into the gnarly rock section known as Elvis holding a firm 3rd place position. But as he would begin his decent a lower ball joint on the front of his UTV would give way causing a flat tire and then putting Bush wedged literally between a rock and a hard spot. Despite the efforts he and his co-dog Greg Frantz put in, Bush would be forced to throw in the towel and call it a day leaving his Rhino to plug the “easy” route down Elvis. This is where the story gets good. Instead of pulling up a rock and simply becoming a spectator Bush would roll up his sleeves and go to work helping every competitor behind him who needed a hand getting down the most difficult trail of the race. He spotted, pulled winch cable, pushed, lifted, moved rocks, laughed and encouraged all in the name of sportsmanship. It was awesome to see him become his competitor’s biggest cheerleader as they were all forced to create alternative lines to make their way out of this canyon of carnage! It would end up taking a real rock buggy to come into the canyon and pull his Rhino out from within the rocks grasp.”

Brian states:“Thanks for the kind words from all of our competitors, and spectators coining me the sportsman of the event.* I’m a racer through and through, and I absolutely love everything about racing. We all have our good days, as well as the bad. Why would I sit around and feel sorry for myself while I could still be part of the race and help others out. Remember, at KOH, no outside assistance is allowed except from other racers. While I’m sorry for creating the unfavorable conditions at Elvis, I was happy to have been able to help the other racers get through it”

Stay tuned for an exciting announcement as Brian will announce a new race car build and scheduled racing events for 2012!Brian would like to thank these people for their efforts. In no particular order:

Greg Frantz, Devin Murphy, Blake Rennie, Bob Nolan, Brent Macias, Branden Sims, Daniel Wilsford, Mitch Moody, Josh Hounslow, Stacey Jordan, Kyle and Michelle Hill, Joey DiGiovanni, William Baptist, Daniel Fernandez, and anyone else who offered support for this race.

Special thanks to Pitbull Tires, and SXS Performance for sponsoring this years King Of The Hammers UTV race, and The International SXS Association for sanctioning the event!**Team sponsors:

As part of Pro Armor’s continuing commitment to product performance, safety and excellence, we are pleased to offer our next generation Slam Latch ™. Since January 2011, the Pro Armor Slam Latch has offered a quick and convenient way to close and secure our popular Pro Armor UTV doors. Recently, however, Pro Armor has received some reports of UTV doors equipped with the current Slam Latch design opening unexpectedly, usually as a result of improper maintenance, inspection or lubrication. There have been no reports of any injuries. While we believe that this issue can largely be prevented by properly lubricating the latch pin and inspecting the alignment of the latch pin and assembly before each use, we nonetheless are offering a new design that will make it more difficult for the latch pin to disengage and the door to open inadvertently. We are offering to provide the next generation Slam Latch to customers that have purchased the original Slam Latch at no charge. Please complete the form below and attach either a picture of the original slam latch on your vehicle or a copy of your receipt. Then Pro Armor will send you a next generation Slam Latch. In the box with your new Slam Latch will be a return label to send Pro Armor back your original Slam Latch. Pro Armor will provide a $10 gift card for all returned original Slam Latches toward your next purchase of Pro Armor products. It’s that easy! Feel free to contact a customer service representative at 888-312-7667 if you have any questions.
